Last Weekend of Summer

It’s hard to believe we are on the last week of summer.  I feel like it just started!  This summer has been a very busy one.  We’ve had something going on the entire season.  With that said, Phil and I decided to take a trip to the beach this past weekend to soak in the last bit of summer, as well as celebrate our anniversary.  Our four year was in August, but we never got a chance to celebrate.

Phil’s grandmother has a condo in North Myrtle Beach we were able to stay at for free.  Her place is right on the water.  Right on the beach + free = major money saving opportunity.

We made the five hour drive on Thursday after we both got off work.  We decided an extra full day at the beach would make up for a long evening of driving.  Friday morning had us a little worried.  We saw rain in the forecast the entire week leading up to our vacation, and the photo below is what we woke up to.  While extremely beautiful, the dark clouds in the distance leave little to be desired when you want to spend the day on the beach.  While we waited to see if the sun would show her face, we opted to eat a big breakfast at one of Phil’s favorite spots in Myrtle.

I’m amazed I didn’t go into a sugar coma after digging into this massive chocolate chip waffle.  This bad boy was waffle + chocolate chips + chocolate syrup + powdered sugar + whip cream + maple syrup.  Oh, baby, it was good!  Just as we finished eating, the clouds started to roll away.  We ran to the grocery store while our food settled so we didn’t have to eat out the entire time.  My family and I have always brought some of our own food on vacations.  We typically buy something for our breakfast and lunches, as well as some snacks through out the day and then go all out for dinner time.  Of course one big breakfast during vacation is a must!

Once we got back to the condo, the weather was perfection!  We suited up and lathered on our sunscreen before hitting the beach.  I’m telling you guys, I haven’t been on such a relaxing trip in a really long time.  I read pretty much the entire time we were out there under the shade of our beach umbrella.  The water was a little cold, but refreshing after sitting in the sun for a while.  Since it was so late in the summer, the crowds and traffic were pretty much non-existent.  We didn’t have to wait for anything.  It was great!

We spent all day on the beach before our stomachs started rumbling.  Phil’s grandmother suggested we go to a place called Nacho Hippo for dinner.  This place was a lot of fun.  They had a band playing music and a $3 margarita special.  The food was tasty, too!  It has a great beachy atmosphere and the weather felt awesome.  The only downside was that our waitress double charged Phil.  It was such a pain to have to deal with while we were on vacation, and Phil still hasn’t gotten his money back.  We are hopeful everything will be resolved so we can go back in the future.  Apparently this is a recurring issue here.  Next time, we’ll be paying with cash!

Once we got back to the condo, we took a long stroll on the beach.  I love walking on the beach at night! It’s so relaxing.  The moon was full the entire time we were there and it was gorgeous!

On Saturday, it was back to the beach!  As you can see in the picture below, Phil and I are both very pale so it was nice having a big beach umbrella to sit under.  My bathing suit if from Target and my sun hat is from Old Navy.

Saturday evening was our “last supper” so we went out for a nice seafood dinner at Wicked Tuna.  I got the grilled grouper and Phil got the grilled seafood plate.  While the food was very good, I have to admit that I wasn’t impressed.  I felt like the place was overpriced for what we got.  We definitely could’ve gone somewhere less expensive and gotten more food for less money that tasted just as good.   We more than likely won’t go back.  There was a small, local seafood joint less than five minutes from where we were staying I so wish we would’ve gone to after that.

Sunday morning was all packing and cleaning.  While we waited on our laundry to dry, we headed over to King’s Pizza for a quick lunch.  King’s Pizza has been around forever and is absolutely delicious! Especially their house dressing.  We ordered the House Special pizza with banana peppers and it was some of the best pizza I’ve had.  Yum!  Of course our eyes were much bigger than our stomachs, but the left overs made for a nice snack on the drive home.

We got home yesterday afternoon to some very happy doggies!  All in all I would rank this vacation as one of the best and most relaxing.  While our dining experiences (besides breakfast and pizza) left little to be desired, the small crowds and beautiful weather made for prime beach relaxation!  I’m a little sad to see the summer go, but look forward to sweater weather!  I started pinning some fall décor ideas when I got home so maybe I’m more excited for fall than I think I am.

How was your weekend?
